Native Jamaican Baritone, Giovani Malcolm, is a storyteller, strategist, and activist. He recently won the first prize in the Classical and Hall Johnson Spiritual categories in the Greater Philadelphia National Association of Teacher of Singing Student Auditions. In 2022, Giovani made his artistic opera debut as Pictordu in Viardot’s Cinderella with the University of Delaware Opera Theatre. He’s also performed several musical theatre and baroque roles, including Professor Baer in Little Women, Dr. Madden in Next to Normal, and Monster/Water Gods Chorus in La liberazione di Ruggiero. Giovani received the Outstanding Senior Voice Award at the University of Delaware and was named a Quarterfinalist in the 2022 Classical Singer Competition. Giovani is the former music director of the University of Delaware YChromes All Male Acapella and Co-Founder of Modality Acapella. As an activist constantly seeking to push creative boundaries, Giovani used the moments of civil unrest during 2020-2022 as an opportunity to stretch himself imaginatively and vocally with his “Speak Up, Speak Out” recital series in which he performs selections by Black composers that sheds light on experiences on Black individuals living in America. Giovani graduated from the University of Delaware with B.M in Voice Performance and an B.A in Political Science and Music Management. He is pursuing a Master of Voice degree at Indiana University’s Jacob’s School of Music under the tutelage of Patrica Stiles.
